Job Hunting 101

Looking for a new job, whether you are currently employed or not, can be very overwhelming. Here are just a few tips to help the process go a little smoother:

RESUME

  • Update your resume with current work history
  • Edit your resume for typos, spelling and grammar errors
  • Be willing to customize your resume to match requirements for the job you are applying for

CONTACTS

  • Make a contact list of everyone you know; friends, family, colleagues, club members, etc.
  • Contact them:
    • Let them know you are looking for a new job and what position
    • Ask them if they know of anyone who might have a position open
    • DO NOT ask them for a job
    • Thank them for their time
    • Follow up

JOB BOARDS

  • There are many free job boards out there; use them.
    • Monster.com
    • Dice.com
    • Glassdoor.com
    • TheLadders.com
    • Linkedin.com
    • LDSjobs.org
    • Jobs.Utah.gov
    • Jobs.KSL.com
    • Careerbuilders.com
  • Make sure you follow the application instructions correctly
    • Companies will automatically discount those who can’t follow their instructions
