Whether you are seeking to upgrade current employment or are between jobs, looking for that next opportunity is stressful. It takes a lot of energy to maintain your confidence and motivation.

Here are three methods we recommend to empower your confidence until you say “yes” to your next job.

  • Power pose for immediate bump in positive energy

Really, as goofy as it may sound, we couldn’t be more serious. Studies have shown that standing tall, fists on hips, feet spread apart, for two (yes, two measly) minutes before an interview will not only increase your positive presence, but your likelihood of interview success.

Try this now (!) because we’ve also found it works as a simple daily energy bump and positivity boost. Take two minutes to test this out – if you have an office you can shut the door, or head to a stall in the restroom – and do the power pose for two minutes. The results are pretty immediate, right?

So, next time you need an energizing boost, take two minutes and power pose!

  • Research prospective employers with an eye toward future happiness

Do you want to increase your likelihood of future job happiness with your next employer? Yes? Then take the time to research the company before you apply for the job. Do this even if they don’t have a current job opening posted. You are empowered! You are seeing if you want them! You are preparing for the opportunity!

  • What’s their latest news?
  • Where are they located? Good commute for you?
  • What about their corporate culture? Does it sync with your personal beliefs?
  • What do current and past employees say about them?
  • What types of benefits and environment do they offer?
  • What are the products they make or services they provide? Is it something you can get behind?

Overall, is this the kind of company you want to associate with? After your research, do you still want to work for them?

While you’re researching, look for added knowledge you can take with you into an interview. Look for things that cause you to be enthused about the company and the potential of working there. When the opportunity arises, go ahead and let them know what you admire about their company and why you believe you could bring added value to what they already have. Enthusiasm is contagious and knowledge is the key!

  • Update your social media and accentuate the positive

We love social media! It’s an awesome resource and a powerful, personal sales tool. Review your LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. and make sure your bios, work history etc. are all up to date. On LinkedIn, make sure your work history reflects your printed resume. These are things a prospective employer will check!

As for your profile photo, check out on LinkedIn some of the executives who work for the companies you’re planning to apply to. Use your best judgement and update your personal profile picture to reflect the type of professionalism reflected by the people who might be your future bosses; even if your job is not at executive level. It’s always better to err on the side of more professional than less professional.

Considering your future boss, you need to be aware – seriously aware—that social media is a two-way street. Review your posts and comments on all your social media sites. Is there anything that doesn’t reflect you in a positive light? We’ve all gone on rants and our friends still love us anyway. But, is there anything you wouldn’t want a potential employer to see? …Something they could misunderstand? The delete button is your best friend.

You can also go the extra mile to be positive in your current and future posts, and publish and share articles that reflect the job you want to be doing. Be the change you want to see in your life; give a lift to your professional self-image and confidence. Reflect the best you!

Notice the three suggestions we’ve given you are things that are totally in your control; which is a great relief in the midst of a new job search. We encourage you to make the most of them, and when you’re ready, give Smith Johnson a call. We’re here to help you!
